The "Babydoll" style was created in the late 1940's by Sylvia Pedlar, in response to shortages in materials after the second World War. Originally designed for night wear, the Babydoll style is also common these days in day wear, particularly as summer dresses. The style, whether it be for dresses or lingerie, is typically form fitting above the bustline, and very loose and flowing below the bustline.

The name became popular after the 1956 film Babydoll, which portrayed Carroll Baker as a 19 year old nymphet.

The Babydoll lingerie is often sold as a set with matching panties, as a typical Babydoll is short enough to make any underwear visible if worn.
